In a weather-shortened week of action around Lexington County many local athletes recorded excellent performances en route to their team’s win.
This week’s winners hail from Dutch Fork and Batesburg-Leesville and poured in buckets for their teams and helped them improve their record before region competition begins.
Voting for Athlete of the Week runs from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday each week at lexingtonchronicle.com/athleteoftheweek. To submit a nominee for consideration, email a photo and short bio to sports@lexingtonchronicle.com.
Batesburg-Leesville junior Ta’Maj Gilliam was named Athlete of the Week after helping the Panthers defeat Columbia and Ridge Spring-Monetta and pull two games above .500.
Gilliam began last week with a 21-point outing against Columbia. He shot 50% for the game and added two rebounds, two assists and three steals. Against Ridge Spring-Monetta, he scored 14 points.
The Panthers began this week 7-5. Gilliam has been a crucial factor in the team’s success, scoring double-figures in all but one contest this season. With the Panthers slated to begin region games this week, the team will hope Gilliam can continue being a spark on the floor.
Dutch Fork’s Michaela Fairwell continues to have an impressive senior season, helping the Silver Foxes win two games last week, including its first region game of the season.
The Silver Foxes started the week with a 67-48 win over Keenan to end its non-region schedule. Fairwell had 21 points, seven rebounds and five assists in the win.
Dutch Fork opened region competition with a blowout win over Chapin. In a balanced team effort, Fairwell scoffed 11 points, three rebounds, four assists and four steals.
The senior has been one of the most consistent players in the area so far this season. She has scored at least 10 points in every game and has two double-doubles this season.
Dutch Fork is looking to repeat as region champions for the second year in a row, and Fairwell’s play will be critical to achieving that.
