The 20th anniversary season of Blowfish Baseball has begun as the team looks to make it back to the Coastal Plains playoffs and championship series for the third year in a row.
Lexington County started the season with two CPL games and one friendly match at home, accompanied with the annual USO softball game.
The team opened the season at home last Friday against the Macon Bacon. It was the first of 12 meetings between the two rivals this season.
Blowfish fans got to enjoy all their favorite and festive traditions, including the Blowie song, outfield chase and more, while watching the team defeat the Bacon 11-9.
It was the first chance for many fans to see some of the team’s new additions for the first time. Players like Andrew Ortiz and Brent Stukes made their Blowfish debuts.
Many familiar faces also took the field, returning for the 2025 season. These players include Cade Bouknight, Zach Cowart and Blake Martin.
The Blowfish took an early lead, going up 3-0 in the second inning. Gray Wells scored the first run of the season after a walk allowed him to cross home plate.
Nick DiCarlo hit the first RBI of the season with a single that scored one. Chris Walley scored the third run of the inning after reaching home on a wild throw.
Macon responded to the Blowfish’s strong second inning with a five-run third inning to take their first and only lead of the game.
Stukes, who started the game on the mound, was pulled in the third, and Bouknight came on to finish the inning. He pitched 3.1 innings, throwing three strikeouts and earning the win.
Lexington County tied the game in the fourth inning after scoring two runs. The team then retook the lead in the fifth, scoring two more runs.
Macon tied the game for the final time in the sixth inning, but Lexington’s three-run bottom half created enough separation to win.
The scoring came to a stop in the seventh inning as both teams were shut out. Each team scored one run in the eighth, giving the Blowfish an 11-8 lead going into the ninth.
Hunter Phipps earned the save after pitching the final inning of his Blowfish debut.
Lexington County played two games on Saturday, with half of the team traveling to Forest City, while the other half stayed home for a friendly against the Catawba Valley Stars. The game against Catawba was played after the annual USO softball game.
The home group tied with Catawba while the guys on the road lost to Forest City 13-7.
These first three games were just the start to a long, action-packed Blowfish season. The team will have plenty more going on later this year, including a NASCAR night, Star Wars night, mullet appreciation night, Fourth of July night and much more.
Lexington County will play every day this week. The team has two home games this weekend against Catawba Valley and the Florence Flamingos. The themes for those games are NASCAR night and prince and princess night.
