Blowfish contending for top spot in division as season nears midway point

Posted

The Blowfish Baseball season continued last week as the team nears the midway point of its season.

Finishing first at the midseason break is huge in the Coastal Plains League as the team that does clinches its spot in the postseason.

Lexington County began this week third in the standings with a 13-7 record. The team was half a game back from the current leader, Forrest City. With a full slate of games this week, the Blowfish can make a push and take the lead.

The Blowfish had six games scheduled for this week, including one on the road in Forrest City on Wednesday. The team has home games on Friday and Saturday this week as well.

Lexington County played five league games last week, going 4-1 with wins over Florence, Macon and Boone. The team’s lone loss came in a 16-6 game against High Point.

The Blowfish have now played Macon and Florence a combined 11 times this season. The team is 8-3 in those games, including a 5-1 record against the Bacon.

Florence and Macon will play the Blowfish 14 more times this season. Continued success in the series will go a long way in helping the Blowfish’s playoff chances.

Many of Lexington County’s own home-grown talent are leading the team in many statistical categories so far this season.

Former River Bluff star Zach Cowart leads the Blowfish in batting average and RBIs. Cowart is hitting 0.400 this season with 70 at-bats. He has 28 hits, 15 RBIs and drew 13 walks.

Cowart plays college ball at Lander and is in his third season with the Blowfish.

Dutch Fork alum Blake Martin is also having a strong season from the plate, hitting 0.333 with 12 RBIs. He is third on the team in batting average and second in RBIs.

Martin currently attends Charlotte and is in his second year with the Blowfish.

Brent Stukes and Cade Bouknight are two more Lexington County products making waves on the Blowfish. Stukes and Bouknight are both pitchers and are two of the team’s go-to guys.

Stukes, a former Gray Collegiate War Eagle, leads the team with five starts on the season entering this week. He has a 1-1 record, a 4.86 ERA and 17 strikeouts in a team-high 16.2 innings pitched.

The former War Eagle plays his college ball at North Greenville and is in his first season with the Blowfish.

Bouknight is in his third Blowfish season. He has been a reliable pitcher every year for the team and has seen his production rise as the years have passed.

This season, Bouknight has five starts, a 3.37 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 13.1 innings pitched.

The former Batesburg-Leesville standout plays college baseball at USC Aiken.

This upcoming week of games will be huge for the Blowfish as they move closer to the middle of the season. The team will continue to lean on those four players and more down the stretch.
