Last week was not kind to the Blowfish.
The team struggled on the field, going 1-3 in Coastal Plain League play and dropped to third in the conference standings.
Lexington County’s lone win came at home against the Flamingos. It was the sixth meeting between the two teams this season, and the Blowfish won a 5-0 shutout.
The Blowfish scored the majority of their runs in the second and third innings. In that span, the team scored four runs and racked up seven hits.
KJ Scobey led the team with three hits, Cris Walley finished with two runs and three different players recorded an RBI.
Four different players took the mound for the Blowfish in the shutout. Micky Sheetz started and earned the win after going 5.1 innings with two strikeouts, five hits allowed, no runs allowed and no walks. Cade Bouknight finished the sixth inning and pitched the seventh. Lucas Highberger came on for the eighth inning, and Hunter Phipps threw the ninth.
The Flamingos got their revenge a few days later at home when they welcomed the Blowfish to town. Lexington County lost a close contest 10-8 but still lead the season series against the Flamingos 5-2.
Lexington County’s two other losses came against the Martinsville Mustangs and Forest City Owls.
The Blowfish and Mustangs started the week with a high-scoring extra-inning thriller. Both teams combined for 34 hits and finished the first nine innings tied at 10.
Lexington County made a run late, overcoming an 8-3 lead in the final two innings to force extras. The Blowfish and Mustangs each scored two in the 10th inning to force an 11th.
In the top of the final inning, Lexington County got three runs across, putting pressure on the home team.
Martinsville responded as the Blowfish defense failed to get outs. The Mustangs tied the game before hitting a sacrifice fly that scored the winning run.
Lexington County’s 11-4 loss to Forrest City was not nearly as close a game. A six-run fifth inning gave the Owls all the separation they needed to win.
The Blowfish had four league games on the schedule this week. The team played in Ashboro on Monday and lost to the Zookeepers 5-4. The team also has games against Macon, Boone and Florence.
Lexington County will also host its annual Fourth of July Glowfish vs. Blowfish game. Fans can come out and watch a friendly team scrimmage, followed by a postgame fireworks show.
