The city of Cayce has received a donation of $2,155,000 from the Boyd Foundation.
Mayor Elise Partin told the media on Nov. 12 near the Cayce Fitness & Tennis Center that the grant will be used for a 12,000 Year History Park Visitors Center to be built across the street from the tennis center on what’s currently a gravel lot.
The site work has been made possible through state funding, while the visitors center will be made possible through the Boyd Foundation, which is focused on education, arts and preservation, animal welfare and mental health, according to its website.
“It has been an honor to get to work on bringing this to fruition. We are excited about what this gift means to our City, our County, and our Country,” Partin said in a release.
Cayce officials expect to break ground in the new year and hope it will be a site for people worldwide to visit and learn about its history.
“The 12,000 Year History Park is a unique archeological site in Cayce, South Carolina, where history and nature converge,” according to cayce12000years.com. “Over the last 120 centuries, the area has had an array of inhabitants, including mammoths, Native American tribes and Civil War soldiers. It includes earthworks from an 1865 Civil War battle. The park is full of stories and offers something for explorers of all ages.”
Partin credits the history park and visitors center idea to Ozzie Naglar who knows it inside and out.
