Chapin’s girls advance to state title match, 4 other local teams fall in semis

Posted

The high school soccer season has reached its end with the state championship games set for this weekend.

One Lexington County team made it past the lower and upper state rounds, while four fell short of making it to the title games.

Chapin’s girls are looking for redemption after losing last year’s 5A state championship to Clover. The Eagles punched their ticket to the 5A Division II title game with a win against West Florence in the lower state championship.

The Eagles have been dominant, finishing the regular season 17-2 and winning multiple games in shutout fashion. The team allowed just five goals all season and enters the title game on a 14-game win streak.

Chapin has not allowed a goal in any of its three playoff games, beating Berkeley 5-0, Lucy Beckham 5-0 and West Florence 8-0. Six different players scored in the win over West Florence, highlighting the team’s balanced attack on offense.

The Eagles will play Eastside in the championship game this Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Eastside has also had a phenomenal year, entering the title match 18-3.

While Chapin has easily advanced past its competition, Eastside has played multiple close games that could’ve swung either way. Eastside’s past four games have ended in either an overtime period or penalties.

Chapin’s boys team was looking to join its girls in the championship round, but the Eagles lost their lower state championship match against Lucy Beckham 3-2. The team entered the postseason undefeated in region games and started the playoffs with back-to-back shutouts.

The game against Lucy Beckham was close the whole time, but in the end, the Eagles fell one goal short of forcing extra time.

Chapin’s boys were one of four local teams eliminated in the semifinal round. Lexington’s boys, River Bluff’s girls and Gray Collegiate’s boys also failed to qualify for the state finals.

Gray was seeking another shot at redemption after losing in last year’s 2A championship game. The War Eagles, now in 4A, lost to Bishop England after failing to score. Bishop England found the back of the net once in the first half.

The loss snapped an eight-game Gray winning streak that included six shutouts. The War Eagles played at a high level all year, securing 17 shutout wins this season.

Lexington lost its shot at the title game after a 2-1 loss against J.L. Mann. The Wildcats had been playing some of their best ball in April, and that carried into the postseason. The team just ran into a talented J.L. Man team that is still a perfect 24-0 this season.

Lastly, the River Bluff girls’ streak of upsets came to a halt with a 2-0 loss against the J.L. Mann girls. The Gators entered the upper state championship after consecutive road wins against higher-seeded teams.

River Bluff was looking to make it three in a row against the Patriots but could not overcome the odds this time.

All of the state championship games for boys and girls soccer will be at the end of this week at Columbia’s Memorial Stadium. Times and matchups can be found below.
