Coastal Carolina is set to begin its 2025 season, looking to regain the national prominence they had just a few years ago.
The Chanticleers had their first losing season since 2019 last year. It was the team’s second campaign under head coach Tim Beck. Before Beck, Coastal went 31-7 in three years under Jamey Chadwell.
Coastal finished 6-7 last season and made it to its fifth consecutive bowl game. The team was picked to finish fourth in the Sun Belt’s Eastern Division during this year’s preseason coaches poll.
The team lost a handful of its key contributors from 2024 to the transfer portal and graduation.
Coastal was able to retain two players from the 2024 All-Sun Belt team. Redshirt junior offensive lineman Nick Del Grande and graduate linebacker Shane Bruce were both honorable mentions last season. In the 2025 preseason poll, Del Grande was selected to the All-Conference First Team, while Bruce was chosen for the second.
Returning receiver Jameson Tucker earned a spot on the preseason second team as well.
While the Chanticleers lost a lot to the transfer portal, they were also able to use it to reload at some positions.
The team saw quarterbacks Ethan Vasko and Noah Kim leave in the portal, but brought in MJ Morris from Maryland, Emmett Brown from San Jose State and Samari Collier from JUCO.
At receiver, Malcolm Gillie from Ball State and Colton Hinton from Furman will provide much-needed depth.
UMass transfer Jalen John is projected to be the lead running back.
Coastal’s defense struggled to stop the run and pass last season. The team is hoping its new additions can reinforce its front line and help its secondary keep players from getting past them.
Jacob Robinson from Emory & Henry, Myles Mooyoung from Miami and Robby Washington from Miami will come in and make immediate contributions in the secondary.
The linebacker spot was one of the few positions on the field where Coastal retained some of its top talent.
Bruce and Wyatt Gedeon are back after big contributions last season. Bruce led the team in tackles last season. Gedeon appeared in 10 games last season before an injury ended his year.
To succeed, Coastal will need all of these new parts to fit together. The team will get its first test of the year against a Power Four opponent.
The Chanticleers will travel to Virginia on Aug. 30 for their season opener.
