Dutch Fork girls fall to J.L. Mann in quarterfinals

Posted

The Dutch Fork girls basketball team lost 57-47 to J.L. Mann in the state quarterfinals on Monday.

The Silver Foxes (22-3) fell behind early to the Patriots (20-6) and failed to contain guard Jade Hailstock, who finished with 25 points.

“The same stuff we’ve been preaching all season basically caught up with us,” Dutch Fork head coach Candance Bush said. “Missed layups, not getting rebounds caught up with us.”

Hailstock helped the Patriots jump out to a 23-8 lead at the end of the first quarter, as she scored 11 points in the period.

Dutch Fork turned up its pressure on defense in the second quarter, holding J.L. Mann to six points in the period. A 9-2 run by Dutch Fork late in the half helped the Silver Foxes make it a 29-19 game at halftime.

Dutch Fork guard Jamia Gerald scored seven points in the first half, while forward Michaela Fairwell added four.

Hailstock finished the first half with 13 points, and forward Breah Franks scored five for the Patriots.

“They were really good,” Bush said. “I prepared my girls for that, told them that we were going to have to keep them contained, keep them in front of us. But they handled the ball really well, so I commend them.”

J.L. Mann’s offense caught fire in the third quarter, as it scored 20 points in the period. Dutch Fork made it an eight-point game with two minutes left in the third, but the Patriots pushed its lead up to 11 at the end of the quarter.

The fourth quarter was low-scoring, as the teams combined to score just 17 points over the final eight minutes. A pair of free throws by Franks made it a ten-point game with two minutes to go. Hailstock put a seal on the 57-47 victory for J.L. Mann when she made two free throws with 56 seconds remaining.

“We got over the hump with the second round,” Bush said. “We got past that. Wish we could’ve gotten past this round.”

Franks finished with 11 points, and guard Sasha Gilmore added four. Fairwell scored 11, while guard Aaliyah Lee added seven for the Silver Foxes.

J.L. Mann advances to face Blythewood (26-2) in the lower state semifinals. Dutch Fork’s season is over.

“The girls worked hard all season,” Bush said. “Just hurt for the seniors to end it like this, especially at home.”
