8 Lexington County girls basketball teams return to action as holiday break ends

Posted

Girls basketball is slowly starting to pick back up after many Lexington County teams took an extended break for the holiday season.

Eight of the 15 Lexington County teams were in action last week, and while the results weren’t favorable for most, it gave teams an extra opportunity to get some run before the start of the region season.

Brookland-Cayce, River Bluff and Swansea were the only teams to add wins last week.

The Bearcats concluded holiday tournament action with a big win over Georgetown 71-30. Three Bearcats finished in double-figures during the game.

Freshman Dalacia Rouse made plays on both ends of the floor, finishing the game with 31 points, 14 rebounds and seven steals. Teammate Kamryn Etheredge scored 22 points and Maci Cobb had 12 points.

Brookland-Cayce entered this week amid a five-game win streak. The Bearcats will look to carry that momentum into region games. The Bearcats are 0-2 after losing to South Aiken and Midland Valley before the break.

River Bluff was one of two teams that played multiple games last week. The Gators split those contests beating Airport but losing to Denmark-Olar.

Against Airport, the Gators won 45-44 after a double-double from sophomore Jenna Johnson. She finished the game with 13 points and 11 rebounds for her sixth double-double this season. Johnson also made the go-ahead basket with 17 seconds left.

The Gators entered this week 8-5 but picked up another loss against Denmark-Olar on Monday. The team begins region play this Friday against White Knoll.

Swansea also earned a win over a Lexington County opponent last week, beating Pelion 51-27. The win pulled the Tigers record up to 4-4 to enter region play at .500.

Pelion fell to 5-4 with the loss and had a game scheduled early this week against Columbia. The Panthers open region play next Tuesday on the road against Ninety Six.

Chapin had two games last week and dropped both of them, losing to Clover 60-30 and Dorman 72-38. The Eagles entered this week 7-8 and start region play with a tough home match against Dutch Fork.

Irmo’s three-game winning streak was snapped in a lopsided loss to Gaffney 38-36.

Gray Collegiate lost its first game in 12 days and snapped a three-game win streak with a 58-43 loss to Georgia’s Butler.

Lexington, Dutch Fork and Northside Christian all got the opportunity to rest following their performances in the Christmas Classic. All three teams were scheduled to begin region games this week.

White Knoll also had an off week with no games but began this week with a loss against Lower Richland, snapping a six-game win streak.

Gilbert, American Leadership and Batesburg-Leesville were also resting last week. The three teams have struggled early this season, sitting with a combined record of 2-19. Both wins are attributed to Gilbert, which began this week 2-10.

Regular season action is back in full force this week with all 15 teams taking the court. Region games start for many teams on Friday, while those in the county’s 4A region are playing in their third or fourth conference games.
