Girls basketball postseason begins in Lexington County

Playoff basketball is in full swing around Lexington County as 12 local girls basketball teams qualified for the postseason. 

SCHSL playoff games began on Monday with four teams in action. 

Chapin was the lone winner of the bunch, beating St. James 48-41 on its home floor. The Eagles were the seventh overall seed in the 5A division II lower state bracket. 

The team's season concluded not long after, facing North Myrtle Beach on the road.  Chapin lost 49-35 to end the year 13-15. 

Irmo also competed in the first round of the 5A Division II playoffs, losing to Lucy Beckham 53-42. The Yellow Jackets end the season 11-14 after finishing fifth in region. 

White Knoll, the county’s third 5A Division II team earned a first-round bye and played its first game Thursday against Westwood. The Timberwolves were upset on their home floor, losing a close one 71-69.

Swansea almost pulled off an upset over the higher-seeded Waccamaw, but the Tigers fell short. The team kept the game close with multiple ties and lead changes throughout. 

The Tigers were tied with Waccamaw entering the third quarter, but the Warriors outscored them 10-6 in the final frame to seal the win. 

American Leadership was the only 2A Lexington County team to qualify for the postseason tournament. The team earned a spot after finishing fourth in the region during their first varsity season. 

The Patriots traveled to play last season’s state runner-up, Landrum. American Leadership was outgunned in a 54-31 loss, ending the Patriots season.

Northside Christian also played Monday, competing in the second round of the 4A SCISA girls tournament. The Crusaders advanced to the second round last week with a win over Laurence Manning. 

In the second round, Northside faced a formidable Northwood team and lost in a 61-35 blowout. The loss ended one of the most successful seasons in Crusaders' history as the team finished 23-3 and second place in its new 4A region. 

A handful of teams were on the court Tuesday night.

Lexington hosted Boiling Springs in the first round of the 5A Division I tournament. The Wildcats were looking to advance past the first round this year after losing a heartbreaker at the buzzer in the first round last season. 

The team dominated and beat Boiling Springs 72-40. the team played J.L. Mann in the second round but lost 62-46. 

River Bluff traveled to Rock Hill with hopes of pulling off an upset. The Gators went winless in region play but still earned a spot in the playoffs. The team put up some fight but eventually lost 74-57, ending the year on a 14-game losing streak. 

Dutch Fork sat out the first round of the 5A Division I tournament after winning the region and securing the No. 1 overall seed in the upper state. The Silver Foxes played  Dorman in the second round, winning 67-63.  The team hosts J.L. Mann on  Monday. 

Three Lexington County 4A teams were looking to advance to the second round on Tuesday as well. Gray Collegiate hosted Crestwood, Airport traveled to Beaufort and Gilbert traveled to Lower Richland. 

Airport and Gilbert both lost. The Eagles fell 48-26 , while the Indians lost 71-27.

Gray Collegiate handled business against Crestwood winning 71-37. The team played Wilson at home in the second round and won a nail-bitter 42-39., despite multiple fourth-quarter lead changes. 

Gray joins Dutch Fork as the last remaining Lexington County girls basketball teams. Both will be back on the floor next week, looking to advance to the semifinal round.
