Girls basketball is tipping off all around Lexington County with many teams looking to start the season off right and develop their roster before beginning the region season.

Girls basketball season begins in Lexington County

Girls basketball is tipping off all around Lexington County with many teams looking to start the season off right and develop their roster before beginning the region season. 

Last week was full of action with all 15 local teams playing games. 

It was a successful week for the Lexington and Dutch Fork teams who won all of their games last week. Both were two of the top teams in the county last season and went head-to-head for the 2024 region championship. 

Dutch Fork is the reigning region champion and began this week 5-0 after adding wins against Newberry, Dreher and Greenwood last week. All three games weren’t close as Dutch Fork won 73-9, 73-27 and 59-40. 

Three Silver Fox players are averaging double-digit scoring in the early outings. Reigning Region Player of the Year Michaela Fairwell is averaging 18 points per game on over 50 percent shooting. Sophomore Trinity Crumlin is averaging a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Aaliyah Lee is averaging 10 points. 

Lexington enters this week 4-0 after earning double-digit wins against Cross Creek and Ridge View. The Wildcats have relied on some of their more experienced players in the early goings, including Izzy Saville and Sydni Anderson. Saville is averaging 15 points and four assists per contest. Anderson is averaging a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds per contest. 

Northside Christian’s team also went unbeaten last week to improve its record to 7-0. The Crusaders have dominated all season, winning all seven of its games by at least 35 points.

The team picked up a 44-point win over Greer Middle College, a 43-point win over Spartanburg Christian and a 46-point win over Silver Bluff all in the past week. Northside is scheduled to play three games this week with more chances to showcase its talent in the early part of the season. 

River Bluff, Airport, Gilbert and Pelion also improved their records by winning a majority of their games last week. All four teams went 2-1 in their three games. 

Chapin and White Knoll lost the majority of its games but did pick up wins to salvage the week. 

The Timberwolves played five contests in one week, winning two but dropping three. One of its wins came against cross-county foe Gilbert in a 64-25 blowout. White Knoll enters this week 3-4 with three chances to get back over .500.

Irmo, Gray Collegiate, Swansea, American Leadership and Batesburg-Leesville struggled last week, going winless. Irmo can get over .500 with wins in its game this week. Swansea, American Leadership and Batesburg-Leesville are still fighting for their first win this season. The Panthers and Tigers will meet this week guaranteeing at least one team earns its first win of the season. 

Big Performances 

Sydni Anderson had a double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds in Lexington’s win against Ridge View.

Alexis Gartmon scored 27 points and added five rebounds, five assists and eight steals as Gilbert defeated Horse Creek.

Meghan Tucker recorded 18 points, 13 rebounds and four steals in River Bluff’s win over Lugoff-Elgin. 

Michaela Fairwell was productive on both ends in Dutch Fork’s win over Dreher, finishing with 27 points and seven steals.
