A search of a Lexington County School District Two student's backpack on Friday morning revealed a handgun, according to a statement from the district.

After receiving a tip about it, Brookland-Cayce High School administrators and the school resource officer located the student in the school, took that student to an administrator's office and conducted the search of the bag.  They acted immediately after receiving the tip, the statement said.

"The student was immediately taken into custody by law enforcement. The student will face district discipline in accordance with board policy and state law," the statement from the school district read. "The district thanks the individuals who reported the tip, allowing for swift and appropriate action by school administration and law enforcement."
