The hearing for the retrial of alleged murderer Alex Murdaugh is scheduled for June 29 in Lexington County.
Earlier this month, Lexington County Circuit Judge Debra R. McCaslin was selected by the South Carolina Supreme Court to preside over Murdaugh’s retrial for the 2021 murders of his wife and son.
Supreme Court documents detail that Murdaugh was convicted of two counts of murder and two counts of possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime in 2023, but after his request for a new trial was denied at the circuit court level, the Supreme Court reversed the denial.
Now, McCaslin, a longtime judge and Chapin resident, will “hear and dispose of all general sessions matters, including trials by jury and civil forfeiture actions, and all motions” arising from Murdaugh’s indictments.
“Judge McCaslin's jurisdiction includes jurisdiction over any future retrial on the murder charges and any related matters,” Supreme Court documents continue. “Judge McCaslin shall decide all matters pertaining to these indictment numbers, and pursuant to this assignment shall retain jurisdiction over this case regardless of where she may be assigned to hold court.”
The June 29 hearing is the first in the retrial and will take place at 10 a.m. at the Lexington County Courthouse.
