The results are in for the vacant South Carolina House District 88 seat, which covers parts of Lexington County.

Former Rep. RJ May, a West Columbia Republican, held the seat but resigned and pleaded guilty to charges of distributing child sexual abuse material.

The special election included four Republicans and one Democrat. A total of 1,488 votes were cast.

Here are the State Election Commission's unofficial results:

  • Republican John Lastinger: 596 votes, 40.05%
  • Republican Brian Duncan: 565 votes, 37.97%
  • Republican Lorelei Graye: 225 votes, 15.12%
  • Republican Darren E Rogers Sr.: 102 votes, 6.85%

Since no candidate received a majority of the votes, Lastinger and Duncan will go head-to-head in a primary runoff on Nov. 4.  Early voting will be held Oct. 29 through Oct. 31, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Lexington County Voter Registration and Election Office, located at 605 West Main Street, Ste. C, in Lexington.

The winner of the runoff will face Democrat Joseph “Chuck” Hightower, who ran unopposed.

Documents from the South Carolina Election Commission show voter turnout was 6.3%, with 7,391 ballots cast out of 117,268 registered voters.

A total of 1,126 individuals voted on Election Day, 353 voted early and nine voted absentee by mail.
