Irmo, Gilbert stars stuff stat sheet, win Athlete of the Week

Posted

The high school sports season is now in full swing with seven different sports in action all over Lexington County.

This week’s Athlete of the Week winners had huge games and elevated their teams to victory. These players contributed in more ways than one, filling the stat sheet and making plays in a win.

Voting for Athlete of the Week runs from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday each week at lexingtonchronicle.com/athleteoftheweek. To submit a nominee for consideration, email a photo and short bio to sports@lexingtonchronicle.com.

Maleek Miller

Irmo’s Maleek Miller showed out in the Yellow Jackets’ 35-32 thriller versus Byrnes.

The team trailed in the final minutes of the game until Miller hauled in a 13-yard reception for the go-ahead touchdown with 34 seconds left. The touchdown was Miller’s second of the game and third this season.

Miller is one of Irmo’s top offensive weapons. He finished the game with 258 total yards as a receiver, rusher and returner.

The Yellow Jackets are off to a 2-0 start this season and are looking to make it back to the state title game. Miller will need to continue producing at a high level to help Irmo achieve that goal.

Kaylie Spires

The Gilbert volleyball team is off to a great start this season, winning all three of its games last week. Sophomore Kaylie Spires is a big reason for the team’s early success, contributing to those wins in a handful of ways.

In three games, Spires had 13 kills, 38 digs, 31 assists, four aces and three blocks. Her biggest performance last week came against Dreher. She finished with eight kills, 10 digs, 11 assists and two aces.

Spires is in her second season of volleyball with the varsity team. After a solid freshman campaign, she is on the right track to having an even better year two.
