Nick Emmanwori’s stellar rookie season has come to an end in the best way possible.
The Irmo native helped the Seattle Seahawks defeat the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LX to win the franchise’s second world championship.
Emmanwori’s presence was felt all over the field as he was credited with five tackles, three forced incompletions and limited his matchups to just 10 receiving yards. He showed off his versatility, lining up in multiple positions and helping the Seahawks defense shut down Drake Maye and the Patriots' offense.
Before the game, it was unclear if Emmanwori would even play. He tweaked his ankle in practice and had to sit out Thursday. He returned on Friday and was eventually removed from the injury report and cleared to play.
When he stepped on the field, he did not shy away from the moment and played just as well as he had all season. Emmanwori finished his rookie season with 72 tackles, 19 pressures, 12 pass breakups, three sacks and an interception. He was second in Defensive Rookie of the Year voting.
Emmawori is one of 19 NFL players who played at a Lexington County High School, according to Pro Football Reference. He is one of five currently active players.
Irmo had two other athletes in its history play in the NFL. Marion Reeves played for the Eagles in the 1974 season, and in 1987, Chris Corley played for the Seahawks, just like Emmanwori does now.
While their time in the league was short, they proved that a guy from Irmo could make it to the big leagues. Almost 40 years later, Emmanwori is showing you can do even more than that.
