After 23 years of service, Courtney Dennis, the Town of Irmo administrator, announced his resignation. His last day will be July 3.
After the council unanimously appointed Dennis as the town administrator in 2021, he has worked directly for the town council and has overseen town staff and department heads.
He was heavily involved in the town’s rebranding initiative, oversaw the completion of Rawls Creek Park and helped plan the development of Irmo's new town hall, which is set to be completed in 2026.
Dennis informed council members earlier this month of his decision to step down. According to the press release, Dennis is stepping down to accept a new opportunity in the private sector.
“Courtney has been a pillar of our town government,” Mayor Bill Danielson said. “His leadership, vision and steady hand have helped Irmo move forward and his presence will be deeply missed. We are grateful for all he has done and wish him continued success in the next chapter of his career.”
Dennis, an Irmo native, began his career in 2001, serving as a reserve police officer with the Irmo Police Department. In 2002, he became a patrol officer.
In 2020, he became the town’s 32nd chief of police, leading a team of 33 officers and employees. During his role there, town leaders say he introduced the core values of integrity, professionalism and dependability.
He also has served in roles including K-9 officer, field training officer, evidence custodian, patrol corporal, patrol sergeant, investigations sergeant and assistant chief. Outside of Irmo, he served as the president of the South Carolina Crime Stoppers Association State Council and was the past vice-chair of the Midlands Crime Stoppers Association.
Dennis has a background in professional development, having graduated from the FBI’s Supervisor, Command and Executive Leadership institutes, received executive training through the LECC/SCHLEO and attended the Narcotics Commanders School.
The press release said the town council will search for a new town administrator in the coming weeks.
