Irmo head coach Aaron Brand had high praise for his starting quarterback after the Yellow Jackets' 60-13 win over Wilson.
Britton Davis had a huge game, throwing for 200 yards and five touchdowns. He also made plays with his legs, extending his time to pass and rushing for over 60 yards.
“He's just a lumberer, bouncing off everybody like Jameis Winston used to do. That's who Brit is, Jameis Winston,” Brand said. “He's playing well. He's trying to get it, and he ain't mastered it yet, but he is all in.”
Davis spread the ball around with ease, hitting seven different pass-catchers. Five of them went on to score.
Demarion Arrington led all receivers with two catches for 91 yards and a touchdown. Jay Eady also caught multiple passes, finishing with 56 yards. He scored a touchdown off a free kick following a safety.
“Eady’s always open. D's always open, so we want to get the ball out of our hands and get it into some real playmakers’,” Brand said.
Irmo’s run game was also clicking against Wilson. Tai Phillips continues to impress in the backfield, rushing for over 100 yards and two scores.
On defense, Irmo was also dominant. Wilson scored on it’s second drive of the game off a 62-yard pass-and-catch score. From that moment on, the Yellow Jacket defense was locked in.
The Tigers would go the rest of the game scoring just one more touchdown, and it came in garbage time when the game was already wrapped up.
Since giving up 24 in the season-opening loss to Rock Hill, the 13 points conceded to Wilson are the only points Irmo has allowed in three games.
“That defense is playing lights out,” Brand said. “It's a credit to the way they prepare. They prepare better than any group I've seen.”
The matchup between the two teams started over an hour later than expected due to severe weather. Once the lightning cleared around 8:30 p.m., teams were able to take the field and warm up.
“I just saw a team that stayed focused through the entire delay,” Brand said. “We thought that they were too loose in the locker room during the delay, but they came out, and they got hit in the mouth early on, but didn't get hit in the mouth again.”
While the lightning cleared, rain was still coming down hard. Despite this, Irmo did not shy away from its game plan, throwing the ball when necessary and pounding the rock with their leading back.
With the win, Irmo is now (3-1) on the season. The team has one more game until region play begins, facing a big test on the road against Dorman this week.
While Brand is impressed with his team’s recent efforts, there’s still plenty he wants cleaned up, mainly penalties.
Irmo was penalized multiple times in a row against Wilson. Fortunately, they didn’t affect the outcome of the game, but it is still an issue the team wants to fix.
On one drive in particular, the Yellow Jackets were penalized five times in a row for committing a false start. It completely killed that Irmo drive and put the team all the way back near their own end zone.
“That's what teams that want to beat the Northwesterns, that want to beat the South Pointes, that want to beat the Dutch Forks in those later rounds, that's what good teams don't do,” Brand said. “Until we stop doing that, we're not going to get to where we want to be.”
Andrew Frick tossed three touchdown passes and rushed for another as Brookland-Cayce got its first win of the season.
Darius Carter caught three touchdown passes in River Bluff’s win over Midland Valley.
Easton Crocker threw four touchdown passes as Lexington beat Spring Valley.
Anderson Stutts had three touchdown receptions for Chapin as the Eagles shut out Airport.
Maleek Miller finished with over 200 yards and two touchdowns, including one off a punt return, as Dutch Fork beat Lucy Beckham.
