Jim Crosland, the current city manager of Cayce, has been announced as Irmo’s new town administrator. Crosland had just announced his retirement from Cayce earlier this month before the Irmo position became available.

Crosland was unanimously appointed by Irmo Town Council on May 21, according to a release from the town, and will assume the role on July 7. He replaces current town administrator Courtney Dennis, who recently announced his resignation.

It’s unclear whether Crosland will leave his Cayce position earlier than originally planned. A press release from the city announcing his retirement earlier this month noted his last day would be Aug. 8.

Irmo is Crosland’s hometown, and he previously worked there as a police sergeant early in his career.

Since being unanimously appointed as Irmo’s town administrator in 2021, Dennis has worked directly for the council and overseen town staff and department heads. He will depart on July 3 to become the chief operating officer of a private company.

“We are grateful for Courtney’s outstanding service and leadership over the years,” Mayor Bill Danielson said in a press release. “His dedication to Irmo has been remarkable, and we wish him all the best in his new endeavor. At the same time, we are excited to welcome Jim Crosland back to Irmo. His experience and knowledge make him the right person to lead our Town, and we’re confident that with Jim and Doug working together, Irmo is in excellent hands.”

Crosland served the City of Cayce in various roles over 28 years, including city manager, deputy city manager and assistant director of the Cayce Department of Public Safety.

Before his time in Cayce, Crosland was a corrections officer and a member of the narcotics team with the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard and holds associate and bachelor’s degrees in criminal justice. He is also a graduate of the 265th session of the FBI National Academy for Executive Leadership.

“The City of Cayce is thrilled for Jim’s next chapter,” Ashley Hunter, on behalf of the City of Cayce, said. “An Irmo native, and graduate of Irmo High School, this feels like going home for him!”

Irmo’s current assistant town administrator, Doug Polen, has been promoted to deputy administrator. In this role, he will take on greater responsibility for day-to-day operations and support town initiatives, the release stated.
