The lacrosse season continued last week in Lexington County.
A few weeks into the season, many teams are continuing to develop an identity and working towards getting in top form for the next stretch of region games.
11 local teams were in action last week, and while some of the results weren’t favorable, there were many positives to take away.
Chapin’s boys and girls teams excelled against White Knoll. The game between the Eagles and the Timberwolves was the only inter-region match of the week.
The Eagle boys team defeated the Timberwolves 16-9. Eddie Wright scored a game-high six goals on 17 shots on net. Noah Northwood scored four goals, Malachi Merkovsky had three, Ethan Covey scored two and Zac Covey scored one.
The win gave Chapin its second this season. The team has struggled against non-region competition but has shown promise in close losses against teams like Nation Ford and Lakeside.
The Eagle girls are the defending 5A champions and have had a better start than the boys. The team began this week 3-1, fresh off a 32-1 victory over White Knoll.
Chapin crushed the Timberwolves as 14 different players scored a goal. Freshman Elle Wright led the team with five goals, Brianne Fulcher had four, three players scored three goals and five had two.
The Eagles are off to a 1-0 start in region games and can improve to 3-0 this week with games against Blythewood and River Bluff.
Lexington’s boys and girls teams also earned wins last week.
The Wildcat boys defeated Riverside 9-6 to snap a two-game losing streak. It was a close contest, but five goals in the second quarter gave Lexington enough cushion to win.
Jack Wilgeroth led the way with three goals. It was his first hat trick this season and second game with multiple goals.
The girls team looked dominant in a 21-6 win over Clover before ending the week with a loss against a formidable Oceanside team.
Lexington has had a great start to the season, beginning this week 6-1. The team defeated Spring Valley Monday to improve to 7-1 and scored more than 20 goals in a game for the fifth time this season.
The Wildcats rely on a balanced offensive attack with nine players averaging at least one goal per game. Lily Sundell leads the team with five goals per outing.
Elsewhere in Lexington County, River Bluff’s boys and White Knoll’s boys were the only other teams to earn a win last week. The Gators defeated Academic Magnet 18-2. White Knoll beat Gilbert 9-5.
With most of the games last week being non-region contests, it is possible to recover from the loss. As region competition picks up this week and beyond, games will start to matter more as the margin of error thins. Playoff seeding will be on the line and anything can still happen.
