Lake Murray lightning strike hospitalizes 12 people

No one sustained life-threatening injuries

Twelve people, including adults and children, were hospitalized Tuesday after lightning struck Lake Murray in the afternoon.

First responders showed up between 4:45 and 5 p.m. at the Dominion Beach Park to assess the 20 people who were struck, Lexington County officials said. 

No one, including the 12 that were sent to the hospital, sustained life-threatening injuries. 

"Lexington County Fire, Irmo Fire, Lexington County EMS and Lexington County Sheriff responded to the Dominion Beach Park at Dreher Shoals Dam for an electrocution," Lexington County Fire Chief Kyle Minick confirmed with the media. "Upon arrival, first responders assessed 20 patients and transported 12 to three local hospitals. 8 patients assessed were adults and 12 juvenile."
