Lexington 1 school board vice chair resigns after husband’s arrest

Lexington County School District One announced the immediate resignation of Vice Chair Beth Shealy on Sunday night, March 29.

Her resignation comes three days after the arrest of Richard Channing Shealy, 53, of Lexington County, who was arrested on March 26 on 13 charges related to the sexual exploitation of minors.

Richard Shealy's website, which has been removed since his arrest, detailed his career as a singer, songwriter and worship leader, with involvement in Lexington area churches. The website also identified him as Beth Shealy's husband.

"The Lexington County School District One Board of Trustees has received the resignation of Board Vice Chair Beth Shealy, effective immediately," the March 29 statement from Lexington One read. "We understand the emotions and questions this situation has raised for students, families, employees and community members. Our priority is and will always be the wellbeing of our students."

The statement from the district did not mention Richard or his recent arrest specifically.

After Richard's arrest, a petition was created by a Lexington One parent, calling for Beth's resignation from the school board. As of Sunday night, it had 342 signatures.

Investigators say Richard distributed and possessed files of child sexual abuse material, according to a press release from the office of South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson.

The case began after investigators discovered files sexually exploiting minors being shared online. Richard was later arrested by the Lexington County Sheriff's Department and charged with three counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, second degree, and 10 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, third degree.

The second degree charges, according to the attorney general's release, are punishable by two to 10 years of imprisonment per count, while the third degree charges are punishable by up to 10 years of imprisonment per count.

Richard's bond hearing was on Friday at the Lexington County Detention Center. He is now out on bond.

"Attorney General Wilson stressed that all defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they are proven guilty in a court of law," the press release read, additionally noting that "Child sexual abuse material, or CSAM, is a more accurate reflection of the material involved in these heinous and abusive crimes. 'Pornography' can imply the child was a consenting participant. Globally, the term child pornography is being replaced by CSAM for this reason."

The school district's statement announcing Beth's resignation noted that the district will "work with local and state election officials regarding the process for filling the vacancy" on the school board.
