Corey Bedenbaugh, an eighth-grade social studies teacher at Batesburg-Leesville Middle School, has been named a State Teacher of the Year finalist, marking the first time Lexington County School District Three has had a teacher make it this far.
"Corey Bedenbaugh is an outstanding educator who goes above and beyond to inspire his students every day,” Ashley Atkinson, Lexington Three Superintendent, said. “Being named a Top Five Finalist for South Carolina Teacher of the Year is a well-deserved honor that reflects his passion, dedication, and commitment to excellence. We are incredibly proud to have him represent Lexington County School District Three on this prestigious stage."
Outside of the classroom, Bedenbaugh mentors young men through his school programs including “Bow Ties with Bedenbaugh.”
S.C. State Superintendent Ellen Weaver said Bedenbaugh inspires his students and is a dedicated educator. “His greatest lessons aren’t just about the past, but about preparing students to be thoughtful, engaged, and well-rounded citizens who help build the future,” she said.
Bedenbaugh received a history degree from Newberry College and a master’s in curriculum and instruction from the University of Phoenix.
Bedenbaugh was awarded $10,000 for being a finalist and will advance to the next stage of the competition, which includes an interview with a panel of judges.
The winner will be announced on April 24 in Columbia. The winner will receive $25,000, will attend speaking engagements, be the state spokesperson, lead the State Teacher Forum, provide mentoring and receive a BMW for one year.
