Lexington bounces back, secures win over Chapin

Posted

Lexington's defense sets the tone early, preventing any scoring threat and shutting out Chapin for three quarters in a 29-7 win.

After a Cameron Wright forced fumble, Lexington took advantage of the possession change and scored the game's first points. Quarterback Avery Coyle moved the offense deep into the red zone with a quarterback keeper, but the drive stalled.

The Wildcats had to settle for a field goal, taking a 3-0 lead early in the game.

Near the end of the second quarter, Lexington regained possession after a failed fourth-down attempt by the Eagles. This gave the team a shot of momentum, as quarterback Easton Crocker made impressive throws, including a touchdown pass to Sawyer Headley that put the Wildcats ahead 10-0.

Coming out of halftime, the Wildcats set up a unique play involving both quarterbacks, Crocker and Coyle.

Crocker took the snap and immediately threw the ball to Coyle. Meanwhile, down the field, Nigel Lewis was in a pristine position. Coyle launched the ball to Lewis, and it dropped right into his hands for a 45-yard gain.

Despite such a dynamic play, Crocker struggled to hit his mark, and running back Markel Byrd failed to get past Chapin's defensive line. The drive resulted in another field goal by kicker Gavin Kovac to further Lexington's lead, 13-0.

After Kaden Blight recovered a fumble on a Chapin return, the Lexington offense took the field in hopes of another touchdown. However, the offense could not pull through, and the Wildcats had to resort to Kovac for the third field goal of the game.

Finally, as the last quarter of the game began, Byrd found his stride, broke through the defense, and rushed for his first of two touchdowns.

The score stood at 22-0, but Lexington started to lose its footing. Kovac missed the ensuing extra point, and Chapin immediately capitalized, driving down the field to secure their first touchdown.

It was Byrd who came to the rescue and swung the momentum back the Wildcats' way with a 40-plus yard rushing touchdown, locking down another Wildcat win.

Lexington bounced back from its loss against Irmo, earning its third win of the season. Now sitting at (3-4) overall, the team hits the road to face Dutch Fork, where a win would build a lot of confidence for the end of the season.
