Lexington County baseball, softball teams advance to district title games

Posted

High school baseball and softball playoffs continue, following an action-packed opening week of games.

District champions will be decided, and some of the Lower and Upper State rounds will begin in the second week.

Coming into the week, 15 teams were still in it. After Monday’s slate of elimination games, only seven remain.

All three of last year’s state champions are still alive and have yet to face elimination.

Airport’s baseball team, Batesburg-Leesville’s baseball team and Gray Collegiate’s softball team claimed their district championships and will now prepare for the Lower State rounds.

Airport won all three of its games in the 4A bracket. The Eagles opened their playoff run with wins over Wilson, Bishop England and South Aiken.

The team’s offense has been on fire so far, scoring at least 10 runs in each of those games.

Batesburg-Leesville secured its spot in the 2A Lower State round after picking up wins over Fairfield Central and Mid Carolina.

The Panthers had to knock off Mid Carolina twice to advance. The Rebels lost their first game against Batesburg-Leesville 2-1, but clawed their way through the elimination bracket to earn a rematch.

The second game was also a close, low-scoring affair, but Batesburg-Leesville took that one too, winning 3-1.

Gray Collegiate hasn’t just avoided a loss in the postseason, the War Eagles haven’t lost all year.

The War Eagles extended their 2026 win streak to 29 games after adding postseason wins over Brookland-Cayce and Darlington.

Through three playoff games, Gray is outscoring opponents 39-2. The team beat Brookland-Cayce 12-0, Darlington 11-1 and Darlington again 16-1.

Gray is looking to secure its third straight state championship, and so far, nobody has come close to pushing the team off that path.

While the three defending champions have looked strong, a few other Lexington County teams are making noise.

River Bluff made it out of the play-in round after earning a two-game sweep over Wando. The Gators lost their first-round game to Carolina Forest but avoided elimination Monday night after knocking out Lexington.

Lexington’s quest to make it back to the state title series came to an end with that loss. The Wildcats lost in last season’s title series and had a turbulent 2026 before eventually winning the region.

The team got to sit out the play-in round but lost its first game to end up in the elimination bracket against the Gators.

Dutch Fork also won its play-in series before getting bounced into the elimination bracket. The Silver Foxes played Byrnes on Monday and won 5-2 to keep their hopes alive.

Both River Bluff and Dutch Fork will be back on the field Wednesday, again facing elimination.

Lexington’s softball team, Chapin’s baseball team and Airport softball team also earned a spot in the district championships.

Lexington lost to Wando on Monday, but it was the team’s first loss of the postseason. The Wildcats will have one more shot to win the district title on May 15 against the winner of the elimination game between Wando and Sumter.

Chapin beat North Myrtle Beach on Monday and can still afford one loss before being eliminated. The Eagles will play in the district title game on Friday, with a second game scheduled for Saturday, if necessary.

Airport lost its first game of the playoffs, but survived three elimination games to force a winner-take-all game against May River for the district title.
