Lexington County baseball, softball teams gear up for postseason runs

Posted

The high school baseball and softball postseason is here.

After a long and demanding regular season, Lexington County’s teams will put their hard work to the test as they race towards a state championship.

Last season, four different teams made it to the final week of play, and three ended the season as champions. This year, 24 teams qualified for the playoffs, including all of the defending title winners.

Games started on Monday of this week and will be played every day, except Sunday. The SCHSL baseball and softball playoffs are double-elimination, meaning teams can afford one slip-up before bowing out.

In 5A baseball, a few teams will have to make it out of a best-of-three play-in series to make it to the double-elimination portion of the bracket.

Dutch Fork, River Bluff and White Knoll are the local teams in the play-in round this year. Lexington and Chapin avoided it and will start their postseason run against the series winners.

Airport’s baseball team, Batesburg-Leesville’s baseball team and Gray Collegiate’s softball team will attempt to defend their titles. The Eagles, Panthers and War Eagles all had solid regular seasons, each finishing top two in their regions.

The Eagles finished second in their conference, behind Gray Collegiate. Airport concluded the regular season (20-5) and (11-3) in region. Gray was (21-4-1) overall and (13-1) in conference play.

Airport welcomed Wilson in the first round. Gray hosted cross-county rival Brookland-Cayce.

Like the baseball team, the War Eagle softball team won its region, compiling a (25-0) record with 14 region wins. The team is going for a three-peat, having won two straight state titles coming into the season.

Gray is not only one of the top softball teams in the state, but the team is also the No. 7-ranked softball team in the nation, according to MaxPreps.

The team played its first game against Brookland-Cayce as well.

Batesburg-Leesville’s baseball team was the other defending state champion from Lexington County. The Panthers shocked everyone, including themselves, when the team went on to win the 2A state title in 2025.

The Panthers finished second in region this season and hosted Fairfield Central game one.

While the defending champs will get a lot of attention, there are plenty of other local teams to keep an eye on.

Lexington’s baseball team finished runner-up in 2025 and will look to shake off an up-and-down regular season to get back to the title series. The Wildcats won their region this season, despite having a sub-0.500 overall record.

The Wildcats softball team is also looking to reach the top after getting so close in previous years. Lexington won the state softball title in 2019 and has made multiple deep runs since then. Still, the Wildcats have yet to get over that hump.
