Lexington County boys basketball teams start the year with wins

Posted

The boys basketball season is underway in Lexington County, and many trends are already emerging as teams complete their first handful of games.

Entering this week, no team has played more than seven games. While many are still finding their footing, a lot can be taken away from these early-season contests.

With 15 local teams, there is a lot to keep up with. There have been fast starts, slow ones and everything in between. Most of the county has a few wins and a couple of losses already on its record.

There are some, though, who have yet to win or lose.

Dutch Fork and Pelion both began the week undefeated. The Silver Foxes and Panthers have each won their first six contests, most in a very convincing fashion.

The Silver Foxes are playing great on both sides of the ball, averaging 71 points per game, while allowing just over 46 points. They’ve scored over 80 twice this season, including once in a tournament game versus region rival Chapin.

Pelion’s hot start has been sparked by their empowering defense. The Panthers are averaging just over 50 points per game themselves, a respectable amount, but they're holding their competition to just over 32 points.

Kolton Rogers has been a stat sheet filler in the early games, recording double-doubles in all six Pelion wins. He is averaging 19 points, 13 rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two steals per game.

While Pelion and Dutch Fork are enjoying fast starts, River Bluff, Swansea and Gilbert are still seeking their first win this season. The three teams began the week a combined 0-14.

There are plenty of opportunities coming up for all three teams to earn that first victory. It is still early, so there is a lot of time left to turn things around. But for a team like Gilbert that plays in a deep eight-team conference, the region season is just around the corner.

Every other team in Lexington County has experienced a few high and low points through their first couple of games.

New coaches are getting used to their new spots. Players are getting used to new roles, and teams are just beginning to gel together.

Teams like Lexington and Brookland-Cayce are dealing with a lot of newness. Under new leadership, the Wildcats and Bearcats have both started the year on the positive side of 0.500.

Other teams that have a bit more consistency in leadership are still getting adjusted to new rosters and players taking on bigger responsibilities.

Irmo, Chapin and White Knoll are some of the teams experiencing this, starting the year with solid records.

Moving forward, teams will wrap up their slate of non-region contests and prepare for the various upcoming holiday tournaments.

After that, it’s full speed ahead into region contests and the race to the playoffs begins.

Last week’s big performances

Kolton Rogers had 18 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, five steals and six blocks for Pelion in a win over Ridge Spring-Monetta.

Samajae Govan scored 24 points and added 11 steals, five rebounds and four assists as Dutch Fork defeated Spring Valley.

Braylen Davis recorded 28 points and five steals in Batesburg-Leesville’s win versus Ridge Spring-Monetta.

Justin Richburg finished with 20 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals as American Leadership knocked off Eau Claire.

Christian Brown scored 23 points in Irmo’s win over Georgetown.
