Lexington County boys golf teams swing for success as season hits midway point

Posted

The boys golf season crossed the halfway mark last week, and many teams from Lexington County are ranked among the state’s best.

The high school golf coaches recently released their rankings of the top teams from each classification. This is the first year the 5A standings were split in two, just like the state championship was.

Six different Lexington County teams are featured in the rankings. River Bluff is the highest-ranked, sitting second in the 5A Division I bracket.

Lexington, Chapin, Gilbert, Gray Collegiate and Batesburg-Leesville were also ranked in their classifications and are playing good golf.

Earlier this month, many of these teams got together for the Lexington County Championship at Golden Hills Golf and Country Club. 12 teams from 10 local schools went head-to-head to determine who was the best of the bunch.

Like in the rankings, River Bluff finished the highest after beating second-place Chapin by five strokes. Howie Vroon, Maddox McCamy and Nathanael Caughman finished in a three-way tie for second to push the Gators to victory.

Chapin’s Wyatt Hightower finished first overall after scoring a 70. Owen Myllykangas earned a top-five finish for the Eagles, scoring a 72.

Jackson Penny was Lexington’s highest-placing golfer, finishing sixth. Brady Senn from Gilbert tied with Penny after both athletes scored a 73.

The boys golf regular season will conclude on May 10. Teams will then send their best golfers to qualifiers on May 12. The highest placers from there will then head to the state championships from May 19 to 20.
