Lexington County soccer stars recognized with All-State nod

Posted

With the high school soccer season officially over, the state’s coaches’ association recently released its selections for each classification’s All-State team. Lexington County players received a lot of praise, with 27 boys and girls players earning a spot.

Chapin led the area with seven total All-State selections. Three boys and four girls impressed the league’s other coaches and earned a nod on the 5A Division II teams.

Gray Collegiate had the second most selections with six of its girls and boys on the 4A All-State teams. Lexington earned four selections to the 5A Division I team, River Bluff, Swansea and Gilbert also had multiple players selected.

The Chapin girls soccer team had four different players from its team earn All-State. Grace Benson, Lila Bowers, Kat Haigler and Sydney Stoner were key parts of the Eagles’ success this past season.

Chapin advanced to the 5A Division II championship game for the second year in a row. The team fell just short of its ultimate goal, losing the crown to Eastside.

Fortunately for Chapin, two of its four All-State players can return next season. Stoner and Bowers were juniors this year and can come back for their senior season. Benson and Haigler were seniors and played their last game in an Eagles uniform.

On the boys team, Jacob Braden, Jalen Tucker and Grayson Zamiello earned a selection. It was the first career All-State honor for all three boys as they helped lead Chapin to the state semifinal. Braden is the only non-senior of the bunch.

Both Gray Collegiate teams had strong regular seasons before eventually falling in the playoffs. While neither advanced to the championship game, plenty of their players were rewarded for their hard work.

Jay Etheredge, Junior Gonzalez and Noah Mitchell were selected to the 4A All-State team. All three players are veterans on the War Eagle team and just completed their senior season.

Etheredge, Gonzalez and Mitchell are part of one of the most successful classes in War Eagles history. While they never won the big game, the team has multiple title appearances and has had some of the best seasons in team history.

The three have been a consistent piece of a well-oiled War Eagle machine. Their presence will be greatly missed next year.

Gray’s girls also had two selections to the All-State team. Sisters Victoria and Vannessa Coleman had an exceptional season in their first year with the War Eagles. The pair were a consistent scoring threat every game and gave Gray a chance to win against anybody.

Senior goalie Sophie Hoffman was also awarded with an All-State selection after doing her best to keep other teams off the scoreboard. In 25 games in goal, Hoffman allowed just 14 goals.

While Chapin and Gray accounted for a large portion of the selections, other schools were represented as well.

DeSean Logan and Barret Wilson of Lexington made the 5A Division I boys team. Adriana Dunut and Alysa Frazier made it for the Lexington girls.

Dutch Fork’s Wyatt Moore joined the pair of Lexington boys on the classification All-State team, and River Bluff’s Brooke Ogorek and Julia Salo joined the Lexington girls.

Gaines Roberts of Irmo was the only non-Chapin athlete on the 5A Division II teams.

In 4A, Andy Rivera of Brookland-Cayce made the boys team, and Gilbert’s Avery Campbell and Megan Wooten made the girls team.

A pair of Swansea boys made the 3A All-State team. Juel Rivers and Ernesto Brazell earned their spot after being the two most prolific scorers for the Tigers this year. Rivers, in particular, was a steady presence as the Tigers advanced through the season.

Finally in 2A, American-Leadership’s McKaylee Garrett became the first girls soccer player in school history to earn an All-State nod. Garrett is also the first person in her school’s history to sign to a college. Garrett will attend Carolina University in the fall.
