Playoff soccer continues this week, but the field of local teams has thinned quite a bit after the first two rounds of play.
Entering this week, eight Lexington County teams were still in the chase for a championship trophy. Three programs had both their boys and girls teams advance past the second round.
Lexington’s boys and girls made it to the third round after winning their games last week. The boys and girls each had a first-round bye, meaning they only had to play one game to make it to the second week.
The Wildcat boys took down Ashley Ridge in their first game, 1-0. The girls played Cane Bay and also won via shutout, 3-0.
Both teams will be back on the field early this week. The girls host River Bluff on Tuesday, while the boys travel to West Ashley on Wednesday.
Chapin’s teams also enjoyed a first-round bye and made it to the second week.
The Eagle boys defeated Lugoff-Elgin 6-0 and played Lucy Beckham in round three this week. The girls got an 8-0 win over Berkeley and play West Florence in their next outing.
Chapin’s girls are trying to make it back to the title game after consecutive championship losses.
Gray Collegiate’s boys are another team that has come close to winning the state final in recent years but lost in the championship. The War Eagles are hoping this is the year they finally break through after earning two impressive opening-round wins.
In their first game, Gray knocked off Darlington 7-0. The team followed that up with a 2-0 shutout over region rival South Aiken.
Gray’s girls are also dominating out of the gate. The team won each of its first two games by a combined score of 10-0. The War Eagles beat Colleton County and May River in the first two rounds.
River Bluff’s girls and Swansea’s boys also made it to week two.
The Gators beat Stratford before going on the road and upsetting West Ashley 1-0.
Swansea earned a massive 9-0 win over Dillon in round one and then went on to beat Battery Creek 3-0.
The third round of games run from Monday to Wednesday of this week.
Upper and Lower State championship games are this Friday and Saturday, and will determine who plays for a state title next weekend.
Lexington County had just one soccer team make it to the final weekend last season. This year, there is the potential to blow that number out of the water.
