Lexington County wrestling teams concluded the team portion of their postseason as the SCHSL state duels championships wrapped up.
Eighteen teams qualified for the postseason and 11 advanced past the first round.
The first two rounds were hosted on the same day by highest seeded teams. Four teams were at each site and competed for a spot in the next two rounds on another day.
Chapin’s boys, Swansea’s boys and River Bluff’s girls were the only teams to advance to the second day of competition.
For the girls, the next two rounds were the final two rounds. The Gators traveled to Dreher to wrestle the other top teams in 5A, but fell short of winning it all.
River Bluff was matched with Greenwood, while on the other mat, Rock Hill wrestled Blythewood.
It was a tense environment with many competitive bouts. People were screaming, fans were on their feet and the wrestlers were putting on a show.
River Bluff took an early lead in its match, but Greenwood fought back. It came down to the final few wrestlers before Greenwood secured some timely pins and took the win.
The Gators' season came to an end in the semifinal, while Greenwood went on to finish second to Rock Hill. In just two years of existence, River Bluff made it to the semifinals both times.
Now that the team portion is done, the girls will compete for individual state titles. Qualifiers took place Wednesday and Thursday. The championships will be Feb. 20-21 at the Florence Center.
The boys did not fare much better in their next round. Chapin wrestled St. James and lost, while Swansea lost to Battery Creek. St. James and Battery Creek went on to lose in the semifinal.
Like the girls, the boys will shift focus to the individual tournament. Qualifying takes place this weekend, and the championship matches will also be Feb. 20-21 at the Florence Center.
