Lexington, River Bluff stars win Athlete of the Week as playoff season heats up

Posted

Spring playoffs are here, which means the high school sports year is coming to an end.

As teams all around Lexington County prepare for the postseason, many of the area’s best athletes will look to continue their stellar play and lead their team to a trophy.

This week’s Athlete of the Week winners guided their teams through the regular season into the playoffs. One has already secured a state championship. The other begins his postseason journey this week.

Voting for Athlete of the Week runs from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday each week at lexingtonchronicle.com/athleteoftheweek. To submit a nominee for consideration, email a photo and short bio to sports@lexingtonchronicle.com.

Banks Alexander

River Bluff baseball star Banks Alexander helped the Gators end the regular season with a win over Broome.

Alexander went 3-4 from the plate with two RBIs as the Gators’ leadoff hitter. His contributions helped push River Bluff to a 5-1 victory.

The win over Broome helped River Bluff overcome an end-of-season slump that saw the team lose six of its previous nine games. The Gators will now prepare for the postseason after finishing fourth in region play.

River Bluff traveled to Mauldin for its first game of the postseason on Monday.

Emersin Clamp

Lexington lacrosse goalie Emersin Clamp had an exceptional outing in the state championship game to help the Wildcats secure the program's first title.

The senior ended her Lexington career on a high note after securing 17 saves in the title game against Spartanburg. It was her second-most saves in a single game this season after recording 19 against Chapin.

Clamp has been phenomenal in goal all season long for the Wildcats. She has saved at least 70% of her shots faced in five different games and allowed 10 or more goals just twice this season.

While her high school career may be over, Clamp plans to continue her lacrosse career at Lander University in Greenwood.
