Despite some big plays from running back Markel Byrd, the Lexington Wildcats suffered their second loss of the season after a last-minute touchdown by Midland Valley in Friday’s match-up.
While Lexington struggled to score during the first half, a late field goal from kicker Gavin Kovac brought the score to 14-3 going into halftime.
This play sparked a shift in momentum. After being overpowered and trailing by two touchdowns, getting points on the board before halftime motivated the Wildcats to keep fighting.
Towards the end of the third quarter, Byrd scored Lexington's first touchdown of the game. This brought the score to 14-10. Here, the offense finished off a strong drive, building Lexington’s momentum and putting pressure on Midland Valley.
Near the end of the fourth quarter, with the Wildcats at third-and-goal, freshman quarterback Easton Crocker took the snap and quickly handed the ball off to Byrd. He was immediately hit by a Midland Valley defender but spun out of the tackle, kept his balance and pushed his way into the end zone, allowing the Wildcats to lead 17-14.
But with less than two minutes left on the clock, the Mustangs scored a touchdown, securing their win over the Wildcats.
After receiving the kickoff, Lexington's offense had one final chance to drive down the field and win the game. They attempted several passes to receiver Nigel Lewis, but none allowed them to score a victory over the Mustangs.
Lexington started the season off strong, with an exciting win at Gilbert, but has since dropped consecutive home outings. Currently, the Wildcats sit at 1-2 overall. Next week, the team hits the road, hoping to secure its second win of the season in a game against Greenwood.
