Spring sports end this week for teams around Lexington County as the baseball and softball season concludes with the state championships.
While only a few teams are left standing, some athletes will have the opportunity to represent their schools one final time in an All-Star event.
The South Carolina High School Athletic Coaches Association recently announced the rosters for the North-South baseball and softball All-Star games, and a handful of Lexington County prospects made the cut.
Gilbert and Airport lead the way with three selections, two baseball players and one softball player each. Lexington has a baseball and softball selection. Chapin has a baseball All-Star, and Dutch Fork has a softball selection.
Hunter Epps and Brice Gillette of Airport earned a spot on the 3A/4A South roster.
Gillette led the Eagles in batting average this season, hitting around 0.380 this season. He also leads the team in hits and RBIs.
Epps was one of the team’s top pitchers this season, earning nine wins with a 1.2 ERA.
Before the pair takes the field in the All-Star game, they will look to end this Airport season on a high note. The Eagles are playing in the SCHSL 4A championship series and can win their first title in program history.
Grant Kissner will also try and help his team win a championship before playing for the 1A/2A/5A South All-Star team. Kissner and Lexington will be in action, looking to defend last season’s state title.
Kissner has had many clutch performances this season, both on the mound and at the plate. In last week’s upper state championship series, Kissner pitched all six innings of the clinching game and had two RBIs as well.
Chapin’s Caden Reeves will also play in the 1A/2A/5A All-Star event, but for the North team. Reeves hit over 0.300 from the plate this season and led the Eagles in home runs.
Joining Gillette and Epps in the 3A/4A game are Gilbert’s Sam Woodyard and Dalton Taylor.
Gilbert and Airport had some heated contests this year as they battled for the region title. That rivalry extended into the playoffs as the teams met in the lower state bracket.
Rivals will become teammates during the All-Star game as all four players will gear up for the South team.
Four Lexington County softball players made an All-Star game.
Lillie-Grace Moore of Dutch Fork will play for the 1A/2A/5A North team. Moore had a great senior campaign for the Silver Foxes and will represent her school one last time before going to Wingate University to continue her career.
Lexington’s Payton Melinauskas will play for the South team in the 1A/2A/5A game.
Airport’s Macie McCracken and Gilbert’s Makenzie Brown will participate in the 3A/4A game as teammates on the South squad.
These events are meant to be a fun but competitive outing to honor all the work and effort these athletes have put in throughout the season. The North-South baseball games will be the final North-South events this season.
