Man dies in Lake Murray near Chapin-area dock

Posted

A man who died in Lake Murray last month has been identified.

The body of Jonathan Lee Shealy, a 43-year-old from Gaston, was recovered from the lake July 27 at about 7:30 p.m. He was last seen struggling to swim and stay afloat off a dock along the 200 block of Dawn Island Trail in the Chapin area of Lexington County, according to the Lexington County Coroner’s Office and an incident report provided by the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department.

Divers with the sheriff’s department recovered the submerged body.

An autopsy was performed July 29, but the cause of death remains pending. The sheriff’s department and coroner’s office continue to investigate.

According to the incident report, a witness indicated they saw Shealy going down to the dock while they continued to clean up and rinse out paint brushes.

Per the report, the witness said he “heard someone yelling help and a lot of splashing, and as he looked towards the lake, he saw Jonathan struggling to swim and stay afloat.”

“[The witness] stated he did not have his phone on him and saw other people coming out to assist, and he tried to jump into the lake to assist Jonathan, but could not reach him,” the report details. “[The witness] stated he got out of the lake and went to get his phone, but by the time he came back, he did not see Jonathan on the surface, bobbing or any bubbles in the water.”
