New park under construction in Lexington

Posted

A new park is under construction in Lexington and could open as early as September.

The Lexington County Recreation and Aging Commission owns approximately 16 acres at the corner of Old Chapin Road and Old Cherokee Road, where the public park is being built.

The Wingard family donated the land to the county for the construction of the park, according to town council.

According to a public document from the town, “The property is shown on the Future Land Use Map as a Suburban Residential area. The Comprehensive Land Use Plan describes the general character of a Suburban Residential area as low-density single-family, detached housing that provides sidewalk and streets that connect to parks, nearby commercial, schools, and more civic uses.”

Plans as of now include a sheltered picnic area and a fenced-in children’s playground with a zip line.

During a recent Lexington Town council meeting, members held a first reading to annex the property into the town, which resulted in a unanimous vote.

“My neighborhood and citizens around that area are so excited about it,” Town Councilman Gavin Smith said.
