Pelion, Irmo hoops stars named Athlete of the Week

Posted

Another week of basketball action has passed and many teams and players are starting to emerge as consistent high-level performers.

This week’s Athlete of the Week winners prove that no matter the experience, anyone can stand out by contributing in multiple ways.

Voting for Athlete of the Week runs from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday each week at lexingtonchronicle.com/athleteoftheweek. To submit a nominee for consideration, email a photo and short bio to sports@lexingtonchronicle.com.

Kolton Rogers

Pelion basketball senior Kolton Rogers has helped the Panthers start the season a perfect (9-0).

Last week, the team got three wins over Newberry Academy, Ridge Spring-Monetta and Swansea. Rogers stuffed the stat sheet in those games, recording a double-double in two of them.

Against Newberry Academy, he scored 16 points, nine rebounds and two steals. In a double overtime thriller versus Ridge Spring-Monetta, he had 15 points, 16 rebounds, four blocks and four steals. Against Swansea, Rogers scored 20 points with 12 rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks.

Rogers’ early-season production has been a big reason for Pelion’s unbeaten streak. He leads the team in points, rebounds and blocks. If he can keep it up, the Panthers could be just getting started.

Lailah Singletary

Irmo eighth grader Lailah Singletary is making a case to be one of the most improved players in the county this season.

Through eight games, she is averaging 20 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, and five steals. This is after averaging 10 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals last week.

Singletary helped Irmo win two of its three games last week, putting up big numbers in the process. She had consecutive triple-doubles in wins over Spring Valley and Dreher.

Against Spring Valley, she recorded 26 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Versus Dreher, she had 28 points, 14 rebounds and 10 steals. She has had six assists, sitting just four shy of a quadruple-double.
