Region season begins for boys basketball teams in Lexington County

Posted

Region basketball competition is officially underway for most teams around Lexington County and others are set to begin this week.

The first part of the season is just a warm-up for many teams as they prepare for region games. From here until the postseason, every game will affect a team’s postseason odds as playoff seeding is determined by region placement and record.

Five Lexington County teams added a region victory last week.

Brookland-Cayce continues to shine in region play. Last week, the Bearcats were the only team in the county to secure two region wins.

The Bearcats improved to 11-4 this year and 4-0 in SCHSL 4A Region 4 games. The team started the week with a huge win over cross-town rival Gray Collegiate 54-45.

In Brookland-Cayce's next outing, the team escaped with a narrow 51-49 win over Aiken. Nate Hughes led the way with 17 points. A.J. Edwards added 12, and Carter Jackson scored 10. Jackson also nailed the go-ahead bucket for the Bearcats with two seconds to go.

The Bearcats will face one of its toughest tests of the season this week when the team travels to play unbeaten North Augusta. The winner will hold sole possession of first place in the region and control their own destiny the rest of the way.

Gray Collegiate bounced back from its loss to Brookland-Cayce with a blowout victory over Airport 97-21.

It was the highest-scoring game of the season for the War Eagles and their biggest margin of victory. Chase Starkey led all scorers with 17 points and five made threes.

Gray Collegiate improved to 2-2 in region games with the win. Its two losses have come against the two teams above them in the standings, Brookland-Cayce and North Augusta.

Airport and Gilbert went a combined 0-4 against region competition last week. The two are a combined 0-8 in region play this season, but that will change this week as the teams are set to play each other on Friday.

Northside Christian started its SCISA 4A Region I journey with a loss to Augusta Christian. It was a high-scoring game, but in the end, the Crusaders could not keep up with their competition losing 104-73.

In the 5A Region 4 conference, Dutch Fork beat Chapin, Irmo beat Lexington and River Bluff beat White Knoll.

Irmo’s win over defending region champions Lexington was one of two wins for the Yellow Jackets. Irmo entered this week 11-4 through the first 15 games of the Alex Quillen era. The team has won nine of its last 10 games after starting the year 2-3.

Dutch Fork beat Chapin 68-47 behind a solid outing from Justus Bell. He recorded a double-double with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Samajae Govan and Bryson Taylor added 19 and 16 points respectively.

River Bluff’s win streak extended to six games after beating Denmark-Olar and White Knoll last week.

Senior Yasir Cromer continues to shine and show he is one of the best players in the state. Cromer is averaging 19 points per game and scored at least 20 in four of his last five games.

Against Denmark-Olar, Cromer scored 23 points, seven rebounds and six assists. He followed that with a 27-point outing against White Knoll to help the Gators open the season with a win.

Elsewhere in Lexington County, Pelion and Batesburg-Leesville added non-region wins. Starting this week both teams will be in region action and will play each other twice in the coming weeks.

American Leadership and Swansea will also begin region games this week.
