The fifth annual Lexington County Sheriff’s Department Touch-a-Truck event was held from 9-11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, at Lexington High School.
Touch-a-Truck is a hands-on event that gives children and their families a close-up look at emergency vehicles, specialized equipment and local first responders. First responders and Lexington County sheriff’s deputies demonstrated how their police vehicles work and answered questions from children. Public safety vehicles such as firetrucks and ambulances were on hand. Children were able to sit in a firetruck and learn from an employee how the vehicles function.
A medevac helicopter was flown to the event, and after it landed, children were allowed to sit in the helicopter and learn about the aircraft. A vintage helicopter named Lena that was used during the Vietnam War was popular with the children. One of the large drones that was flown in early 2006 was there for children to see and learn how it was used.
Several vendors distributed ice cream and school supplies. Play stations where children could get a library book or play with building block toys were available. The line was a long wait, but children loved to ride the Jamil Choo Choo Train around the parking lot.
