Cayce officials say a city employee died at work after suffering a medical emergency Monday, Oct. 5, and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating the worker’s death.
Cayce declined to identify the employee or the city department where he or she worked in a Monday afternoon news release from Karly Shorter, the city’s public information officer.
“Out of deep respect for the employee’s family, their identity is being withheld at this time while loved ones are given space to process this profound loss,” Shorter said in the release.
Emergency personnel responded to a medical call around 9 a.m., Shorter said. First responders attended to the worker, who was later pronounced dead at the scene.
“We are absolutely heartbroken by the tragic loss of one of our valued city team members,” Cayce City Manager Michael Conley said in the release. “Our thoughts, prayers and deepest condolences are with the family, friends and colleagues. The entire city family is mourning today, and we are committed to supporting our staff and the family through this incredibly difficult time.”
The news release says Cayce’s city government is grieving the worker’s death, which officials described as “heartbreaking.”
SLED is investigating the workplace death.
Shorter said Cayce officials “are cooperating fully to determine the precise cause of the tragedy” and said the city would release more information as it becomes available.
