Lexington-Richland School District Five social studies teacher Caroline Milhorn of Spring Hill High School has been selected as the recipient of the 2026 South Carolina Council for the Social Studies Early Career Educator Award.

Milhorn, who is in her second year of teaching, was recognized for her work as an early-career educator dedicated to social studies instruction. The award recognizes teachers in the first two to five years of their teaching careers in South Carolina who demonstrate a commitment to effective social studies education.

“I am so grateful to receive this year’s South Carolina Council for the Social Studies Early Career Educator Award,” Milhorn said. “Receiving this award means so much to me, and I am so thankful for my family, coworkers and friends who support me every day. I am especially grateful for my coworkers and fellow educators who continue to mentor and guide me through every challenge that I face during these early, foundational years as a new teacher. I feel so fortunate to work in a field where I can help guide students through their learning journeys, and I am even more excited to continue growing as an educator!”

As the award recipient, Milhorn will receive a $250 award and comprehensive memberships to the National Council for the Social Studies, as well as registration for the South Carolina Council for the Social Studies conference.

“I am so proud of Ms. Milhorn for receiving this well-deserved award,” School District Five Social Studies Coordinator Melony Sanford said. “Her enthusiasm for teaching social studies and the positive impact she has on students in District Five each day are a testament to her dedication as an educator."

Milhorn will be formally recognized and presented with the award on Oct. 30 at Francis Marion University.
