A recent Facebook post from a local business owner stated, “Could you please explain why the town of Lexington is charging $3,000 for a permit to paint the exterior of my gas station? As a business owner, I am concerned that this fee may be excessive and unfairly burdensome.”
This received attention from Lexington Town Council members, prompting discussion at the May 19 town council work session.
“We actually do not require a permit for painting,” Director of Planning and Building Jessica Lybrand told council. “If it’s a commercial property that is located in our commercial corridor, we do ask for paint samples to ensure that it meets architectural appearance, but we do not require a permit for painting. The contractor simply needs to have a business license, which would not amount to $3,000."
