What to know about the upcoming District 88 election

4 Republicans, 1 Democrat in the Lexington County race

A special election for the South Carolina House District 88 seat, which covers parts of Lexington County, is coming up, with four Republican candidates and one Democrat having filed to run. 

The seat became vacant after former Rep. RJ May, a West Columbia Republican, resigned from the seat and pleaded guilty to charges of distributing child sexual abuse material.

Early voting began Oct. 6 and will continue through Oct. 17, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Lexington County Voter Registration office located at 605 West Main St., Suite C. 

The primary election will be held Tuesday, Oct. 21. If necessary, a primary runoff will follow, with early voting from Oct. 29 through Oct. 31.

The runoff election, if needed, will be on Tuesday, Nov. 4.

Here are the candidates: 

  • Republican Brian Duncan
  • Republican Lorelei Graye
  • Democrat J. Chuck Hightower
  • Republican John Lastinger
  • Republican Darren E. Rogers Sr.
