On Thursday, June 12, the annual Women Veterans Recognition Day was held on the front lawn at the Irmo Town Hall. This event honors the 1948 Women’s Armed Services Integration Act signing by then-President Harry S. Truman. 2025 marks the 77th anniversary of the groundbreaking legislation for America’s military women. This day granted women a permanent place and an opportunity for a career in the nation’s military.
This event was hosted by Shelly Langston, U.S. Navy Veteran and South Carolina Military Women’s Memorial Ambassador.
Women veterans from several branches of service attended. Brenda McClain and Felicia Williams gave out special thank-you goodie bags to veterans prepared by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. A special table was set up with notebooks and other information about the Military Women's Memorial in observance of Women Veterans Recognition Day.
At noon, Irmo Councilman Gabriel Penfield welcomed everyone in attendance. Afterwards, he led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance. Irmo Mayor Bill Danielson read the proclamation about the Women Veterans Recognition from 1948. The guest speaker for the event was Erika Jones, retired MSgt in the United States Air Force. The event ended with Shelly Langston asking all veterans to stand and be acknowledged. Afterwards, a group photo was taken of the women Veterans on the steps of the Irmo Town Hall. A special BBQ meal was prepared for all Veterans in attendance inside the town hall.
