Annual Midland’s Women’s Day empowers with makeovers, education and self-defense classes

Being pampered and educated don’t fall into the same event frequently, but when they do it’s during Midland’s Women’s Day.

The 6th annual Midlands Women’s Day is set to kick off at 10 a.m. on July 22. The event, hosted by Touch of Magic Events, is looking to treat women from all across the Midlands to a day of pampering, educational activities and shopping.

Touch of Magic Events is a Florida-owned business that plans free and fun events for everyone of all ages. It has hosted events such as food truck fests, health fairs and kids’ day festivals all across the Southeast.

Alongside the self-care, women will have the opportunity to learn self-defense tactics from companies like 9 Round Kickboxing. The Lexington County location of the franchise will be teaching this year’s self defense presentation.

“Every event focuses on education and arming women with information that can help them navigate life easier,” Melinda Perez, managing director of Touch of Magic Events, told the Chronicle. “Based on feedback received at events, the community truly appreciates us bringing all of the information together in one place and making it a fun way to learn.”

The Lexington County involvement doesn’t stop at self defense. West Columbia’s Alegria Dance Studio will host a belly dance demonstration, and the Harbison area’s Capital City Chiropractic will lead a presentation on “The Five Essentials of Health.” Lexington paint-and-sip business Canvases With Candace and Your CBD Store, which has a Lexington location, are sponsors.

Touch of Magic’s first event was hosted in 2013, but despite being based out of Florida, the company’s birthplace is Columbia.

But it wasn’t until recently that the company hosted its first women’s day.

“I decided to add a women’s event to pamper all the moms that we saw come out to our Family Expos and Kids Festivals,” Perez said. “We wanted to host an event for them and include women of all ages because nothing was hosted in the area that focused just on women.”

This year’s event is sponsored by seven businesses, one of which is Your CBD Store, a franchise that has been present in the Midlands for nearly five years.

“We just want to get our name out there,” said Kristina Hunter, store and marketing manager at Your CBD Store. “We’re trying to spread the word that we are in Columbia and we’ve been open for five years. We really want to spread the word that we’re a CBD-focused boutique-style store.”

But business aside, Hunter is excited to have a platform to reach her community educationally.

“I see great results from my customers using it for body pain, anxiety and stress,” Hunter said. “Showing them (event-goers) that there’s a different way to deal with that stress and take care of yourself first. I think that that’s really important.”

Hunter is also excited to see women in her community being empowered by others and this event accomplishes that goal.

“I think that women are so important and it’s important to appeal to women because they have a different level of empathy for others, especially when it comes to health and wellness,” Hunter said. “Because of this, I definitely think women should be celebrated every day.”

The event will offer self-care activities such as henna tattooing, hair styling, manicures and even massage chairs.
