Jan. 6 started with good news for Dutch Fork senior Jarvis Green.
The Clemson University signee and Mr. South Carolina Football finalist learned he was named Gatorade’s South Carolina High School Football Player of the Year.
In joining former Lexington running back Demetris Summers in winning the award, He rushed for 2,272 yards and 33 touchdowns, caught 36 passes for 527 yards and five touchdowns and had two kickoff returns for scores in leading the Silver Foxes to a third state title in four years and seventh overall.
“I couldn’t do that without my teammates, family and just the coaches,” Green said. “Coach Knotts really blessed me by putting in position where I needed to be to make plays. And just to have all this coming my way just taking my blessing and God doing his work for me.”
The news only got better for Green later in the evening. Dutch Fork defeated Brookland-Cayce 45-42 to win its second straight game since his return to the team.
Providing a happy close to Green’s day was teammate Bryson Taylor. He scored a game-high 18 points, including five of the Silver Foxes’ last eight points after the Bearcats used an 8-0 run to tie the game in the fourth quarter.
“Bryson, I was putting a lot of pressure on him before Jarvis came back,” Dutch Fork boys’ basketball coach Brett Jones said. “Bryson’s been flourishing this week with Jarvis. With both of them in the lineup, he doesn’t have to be the number one. He can be the number two and that’s been beneficial for him.”
Instead of Green, who finished with six points, it was Elgin Sessions who provided double-digit scoring with 10 points. He acknowledged still needing time to get back in sync with teammates but believes his energy and leadership will benefit the underclassmen.
Dutch Fork returns to action Jan. 13 against White Knoll.
