Football, basketball stars’ clutch scoring leads to Athlete of the Week honors

Posted

It’s a transition period for high school sports as athletes move from the frigid fall sports fields to the warmth inside a gymnasium for the winter season.

While most schools’ fall sports season is over, there are a few local football teams still in the race. And with basketball getting started for a handful of programs, there were opportunities for someone to be named Athlete of the Week.

This week’s winners came up clutch with their scoring on the football field and basketball court. One player’s points kept their team’s title hopes alive, while the other helped their team start the year strong.

Voting for Athlete of the Week runs from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday each week at lexingtonchronicle.com/athleteoftheweek. To submit a nominee for consideration, email a photo and short bio to sports@lexingtonchronicle.com.

Weston Mims

Gray Collegiate advanced in the 4A playoffs after a last-second field goal from kicker Weston Mims.

Mims nailed the 20-yard field goal to break a 28-28 tie with Hilton Head Island and put Gray Collegiate in the 4A semifinal. He also hit all of his extra point tries after Gray touchdowns.

The junior has been close to automatic for the War Eagles this season. He entered the contest against Hilton Head Island 59 of 61 on extra point attempts and perfect on four field goal tries.

Gray Collegiate will play South Florence this week for a spot in the state championship game. The War Eagles can take some comfort in knowing if they need it, Mims can deliver clutch kicks.

Evie Godfrey

River Bluff basketball junior Evie Godfrey is adjusting to her new school nicely.

The guard helped the Gators start the year strong with wins last week. River Bluff defeated Chapman 51-21 and Broome 61-34 to start the season 2-0.

Godfrey was one of the elite playmakers in Lexington County last season with Northside Christian. She is hoping to bring those skills to a River Bluff program seeking a turnaround from past struggles. So far, she is doing that, scoring 17 points in the win over Broome.

River Bluff has a key game this week against Gray Collegiate. The War Eagles are a top-10-ranked team in 4A, making it a good test for Godfrey and the Gators.
