The final few days of the fall sports season are here, as only a handful of Lexington County teams remain in the events still being played.
Last week saw the conclusion of the girls golf season. This week, the volleyball and girls tennis seasons will wrap up, and over the course of the next month, football teams will start to drop off as the playoffs continue.
With everything on the line, players are putting it all on the line and attempting to produce their best performances. This week’s Athlete of the Week winners did that and led their teams to the top.
Voting for Athlete of the Week runs from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday each week at lexingtonchronicle.com/athleteoftheweek. To submit a nominee for consideration, email a photo and short bio to sports@lexingtonchronicle.com.
Coming into the playoffs, Batesburg-Leesville is one of the hottest teams in Lexington County, and Terrance Cook is a big reason why.
The Panthers finished the regular season riding a six-game winning streak, overcoming a 0-4 start to the year. The team went undefeated in region play to finish first and receive a first-round bye in the A Division I playoffs.
While little was at stake in the season-finale against Ridge Spring-Monetta, Cook and the Panthers made sure to take care of business and look even more dominant.
Batesburg-Leesville won the game 49-6. Cook was responsible for five of the Panthers’ seven touchdowns, rushing for three and passing for two more.
Cook’s dual-threat abilities open up a lot for Batesburg-Leesville’s offense. As the team begins its playoff journey next week, it will look for him to be the engine that makes things go.
River Bluff’s girls golf team recently captured its first state championship in program history. Leading the charge for the girls was sophomore Minghe Huang.
Huang came into the championship round fresh off an individual region and individual upper state title. All season long, she was the Gators No. 1 golfer, but she was also supportive of and by her teammates.
Together, the group clinched the state title by 10 strokes. Huang placed the highest on the team, shooting 159, good enough for fourth-place overall.
The win is the third title for the Gators golf program in two years, counting the previous two won by the boys. With Huang only being a sophomore, she and the Gators can be consistent contenders.
