Another week of fall sports action has passed, with many teams and players around Lexington County looking to play their best as the season comes to a close and the playoffs gear up.

This past week saw many big performances in crucial region competitions. This edition’s Athlete of the Week winners showed up and made clutch plays in their teams’ wins.

Voting for Athlete of the Week runs from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday each week at lexingtonchronicle.com/athleteoftheweek. To submit a nominee for consideration, email a photo and short bio to sports@lexingtonchronicle.com.

Amadre Wooden

Batesburg-Leesville senior running back Amadre Wooden put the Panthers on his back during last week’s win over region rival Ninety Six.

Wooden led all rushers in the game with 238 yards and four touchdowns on 19 carries. He averaged over 12 yards per carry and had a 42-yard run during the game.

The senior has been the focal point of Batesburg-Leesville’s offense this season. He’s run for over 100 yards in five of the team’s games this season and just had his fourth game in a row with over 200 rushing yards and multiple touchdowns.

Wooden has over 1,000 yards already this season and scored 18 touchdowns this season, including one as a receiver and kick returner.

Batesburg-Leesville began this week (1-1) in region games. The team will continue to lean on Wooden down the stretch for its final three games.

Kaylie Spires

Gilbert sophomore setter Kaylie Spires had a big game for the team in a region contest against Midland Valley.

The Indians won the match three sets to none, thanks in part to Spires’ spectacular play. She finished with a team-high nine aces and 24 assists. She also added five kills and 11 digs to round out an all-around performance.

Spires is only a sophomore, but is in her third year of varsity volleyball. She has had a steady increase in production each season and is in the midst of her most impactful year so far.

Gilbert began the week (6-6) in region games. The team currently sits in fourth place in the standings with four games to go. Spires will be a key player to watch for the Indians down the stretch.
