Lexington County baseball, softball teams end season in upper, lower state brackets

Posted

The baseball and softball seasons are almost over, and not every Lexington County team made it to the final series.

A few local teams advanced past the district round but lost last week during the upper and lower state portion of the tournaments. The Gray and Dutch Fork baseball teams and the Chapin and Gilbert softball teams were all eliminated last week and concluded their seasons.

Gray was eliminated after losing consecutive games to Mid-Carolina and Strom. The War Eagles, who were previously playing dominant baseball, got beat down in their game against Mid-Carolina, losing 14-0.

The War Eagles recorded just one hit in six innings of action. Mid-Carolina, on the other hand, had 18 hits and finished the game in the sixth after a five-run inning.

Gray faced elimination after the loss and welcomed Strom Thurmond to town for a win-and-stay-in match. Gray’s hitting struggles continued, earning just four for no runs. The team’s pitching and defense were significantly improved, giving up only five hits, but those translated to four runs.

That loss was the final blow for the War Eagles this season, and they were knocked out of the postseason. The team’s hopes of making it back to the championship series and avenging last year’s loss came up short, so the team will break and try again next year.

Chapin’s softball team was also eliminated late in the playoffs, going out a round before the lower state championship series. The Eagles defeated Berkeley in the first game of the bracket before losing to Summerville and facing elimination.

The team would need to beat Berkeley for a second time in less than a week if it wants to advance. The Eagles put up a fight defensively but came up short on offense, losing 2-0. The game was scoreless entering the penultimate inning, but Berkeley scored two runs off ground balls to win.

Dutch Fork and Gilbert both went out early in the upper and lower state brackets after losing their first two games.

The Silver Foxes lost a close 6-5 game to region rival and eventual upper state champions Lexington. The Wildcats won the game by making more out of their opportunities, despite recording fewer hits.

In the elimination contest against Dorman, Dutch Fork lost by one run for the second straight game.

The Gilbert softball team went out the same way, losing by a point in its elimination game. The Indians received a 14-0 beatdown by Loris in its first game of lower state and were paired with Dillon in the elimination match.

Dillon and Gilbert were locked in a defensive dead heat. One run was scored and it wasn’t even off of a hit. A ball snuck past the Gilbert catcher in the second inning, giving the Dillion runner on third a chance to haul it home.

That missed ball proved to be killer. Dillon finished the game with no hits, but because of that run and Gilbert’s own offensive issues, the Indians were sent home packing.
